Why pre-market volume matters

A price move on thin volume can disappear as quickly as it appeared. A move on heavy volume means many traders are participating — and in pre-market, when volume is normally light, a sudden surge stands out. That is why many day traders build their watchlist around relative volume rather than price change alone.

Relative volume (Rel Vol) compares a stock's current volume with its normal volume for the same period. A reading of 1x is ordinary; 5x means five times the usual activity. The scanner above ranks every mover in the feed by relative volume, highest first, alongside price, change % and the latest headline so you can see whether there is news behind the activity.

Volume alerts fire when a stock's relative volume crosses your threshold — 5x by default, adjustable in the alert settings. With DayTradingNews open in a browser tab, alerts arrive as an on-screen pop-up, an optional sound and a desktop notification when the tab is in the background. Turn on email alerts and they reach your inbox even when the site is closed — batched to at most one email every five minutes.

Members get alerts on every stock on the scanner, pushed in real time. High volume confirms interest, not direction, and low-priced stocks can stay volatile and illiquid even when volume spikes.
